South Park Ranger District Begins River Restoration Project at Elevenmile Canyon Entrance

Park County, CO - The South Park Ranger District of Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands is partnering with the Coalition of the Upper South Platte and Colorado Springs Utilities to remove Lake George Dam and restore the South Platte River at Elevenmile Canyon's entrance, near Lake George, Colorado. The area will be closed to public access from July 16 to December 31, 2023. Please read the full announcement here!

  • Project Objectives: Complete removal of the outdated dam and restoration of the South Platte River's sport fishing segment to its natural state.

  • Benefits: Restoration activities will improve aquatic habitat, water quality, and fish reproduction along approximately 45 miles of the South Platte River.
  • Enhanced Visitor Experience: The project includes parking improvements, relocation of facilities, and accessibility enhancements.

Support from Park County's Land and Water Trust Fund helped make this project possible. The initiative aligns with the U.S. Forest Service's goal to protect and enhance National Forest System watersheds for the well-being of communities and resilient ecosystems.
