Services Provided by Victim Services

We are sorry that you have been the victim of a crime or suffered a loss.  Being victimized and going through the criminal justice system can be difficult and confusing. We would like to give you support, information and referrals.

The VICTIM ADVOCATE PROGRAM can assist victims, witnesses, their families, and friends following a crime or incident by providing:

bulletCrisis intervention with victims and families
bullet Referrals to supportive agencies, both public and private
bullet Assistance with application for victim compensation benefits
bulletLiaison with the Victim Compensation Board
bullet Information concerning the status of an investigation
bullet Accompany victims to court appearances
bullet Follow-up phone contacts with victims and families
bullet Information and assistance in obtaining restraining orders
bullet Intercession with employers, landlords, creditors, service providers, criminal justice system and other interested parties
bulletSafety planning assistance
bullet Community liaison during natural disasters
bullet Community awareness programs concerning victim services to groups, schools, and businesses
 

Protection for Crime Victims

Temporary Restraining Orders for domestic violence cases may be obtained by going to the Park County Clerk of the Court located at the court house in Fairplay, CO. For assistance in filling out TROs and/or accompaniment to court call Park County Victim Services or Colorado Legal Services (719-539-4251). If you already have a private attorney, they can assist you with this process. If you or a member of your family have been injured as a result of a crime, you may be eligible for compensation for financial loss. The Victim Compensation Board may award for:

bulletMedical and hospital expenses
bulletOutpatient care/counseling
bulletBurial expenses
bulletLoss of earnings/or support

You may also be awarded up to $1000.00 for replacement or repair of doors, windows, locks, or other security devices on dwellings, when damaged in the commission of a crime. For initial assistance with this process call Park Co. Victim Services or the Park Co. District Attorney’s Office.

Victim's Bill of Rights

bulletVictims and witnesses have a right to be treated with dignity and compassion.
bulletHave a right to protection from intimidation and harm.
bulletHave a right to be kept informed about various phases of their case, including investigation, prosecution, trial, and sentencing.
bulletHave a right to provide information and input into the criminal justice process, especially at such key points as plea bargaining, sentencing, and parole release hearings.
bulletHave a right to speedy return of their property used for evidence.
bulletHave a right to notification from officials about arrest, release of defendants, time and location of legal proceeding, sentencing, and parole hearings.
bulletHave a right to be informed about eligibility for state crime compensation or financial support, where applicable, and the right to be helped in completing application forms in a timely manner when applicable.
bulletHave a right to request and utilize the services of the Victim Advocate Program.
