Middle Fork Mine Water Quality Study

Coalition of the Upper South Platte 2018 mine water quality map

Coalition of the Upper South Platte sampled the Middle Fork of the South Platte River to determine if mines are discharging contaminates to the Middle Fork. Six river locations were sampled three times in 2018 for water quality and sediments near the town of Fairplay were sampled once, specifically for mercury.

The project will develop a strategic watershed plan and provide the specific data needed to seek funds from EPA and CDPHE for mine clean-up projects, and will provide a list of recommended projects to improve water quality in the upper basin.

Partners on this project are Colorado Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency, United States Forest Service, CO Division of Reclamation & Mine Safety, Town of Alma, Town of Fairplay.
